Fabric storage bins are commonly used at home or even workplace. The reason why everyone loves them is they help them sort out random objects lying in the room. Moreover, they are better looking than ordinary cardboard cartons. How is that? It is because you can use the fabric of any pattern or design you like for it. You can use matching fabric with your furniture or wall paint, or you can use your favorite character’s image on the fabric. Different options are available for you in an oxford fabric bin.

You can also buy a high-quality oxford fabric storage bin online if you struggle to make it at home. Due to not having resources or time, you can easily buy these oxford fabric bins online. Those who are selling them online also need a supplier to supply them with the best oxford storage bins on time. This is why some people buy them in different sizes with customized designs and colors. If you have the fabric of your favorite color and enough tools to make some at home, you can learn these two types of fabric bin-making via the below steps.

Supplies You Need

You will have to use some important supplies to make yourself the best oxford fabric bin at home. These simple items are normally available at home most of the time. You will hardly need to buy them or just a few of them can be purchased if they are not available at your home.

  • 2 square-shaped fabrics of 20 inches
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Heavy interfacing (half an inch smaller than thin interfacing)
  • Cardboard (optional)
  • 4 thin interface squares of 6.5 inches each
  • Pen
  • Iron
  • Double-fold bias tape
  • Polyester belt

Fabric Storage Bin with Thick Interfacing

This type of fabric storage bin is commonly used everywhere. However, both types require sewing skills if you have one. It is softer than the cardboard type because its strength solely depends on the thick interfacing inside it. Now you will have to follow the below steps to make the best oxford storage bin for yourself.

1.  Making Portions in the Fabric

Make 9 portions with the help of a pen on that square-shaped fabric. After you make 9 portions, you will see 9 same-sized squares on that sheet. Now, you will have to get a plus-shaped size fabric by eliminating 4 squares (each corner of the fabric). Once you get the shape of a plus in that sheet, repeat it with the other square-shaped fabric sheet.

2.  Attaching Thin Interfacing on Plus-Shaped Fabrics from Inside

Now you will have to attach both plus-shaped fabrics with thin interfacing squares. You will have to use an iron to attach those interfacings to the fabric. Once you attach both fabrics with interfacing, you will get a thicker layer on all sides of the fabric. Make sure, you do that from inside.

3.  Combining Both Plus-Shaped Fabrics with a Layer of Heavy Interface

Once you complete the previous two steps, now you will have to combine both sides in a symmetrical form with the help of heavy interfacing. It is mandatory to give thick support to all the squares of the fabric. The reason why we took a half-inch smaller size for thick interfacing is that the remaining half-inch will be taken by the sewed area. It will be like a sandwich, where both plus-shaped fabrics will be outside and the thick interfacing will be inside.

4.  Turning into a Box Shape

Once you have sewed all the boxes from the edges, now you can fold them upwards to turn them into a box. That’s how you will get a fabric box. But you will have to slide an additional thick interface on the base of the box. It will provide firm support at the bottom. Now, you can close the remaining open area by sewing it with the machine.

5.  Attaching Double-Fold Bias Tape on Edges and Handles

In the end, you can sew double-folding bias tape on the edges of the box to provide a beautiful look. It will not require much effort as you can either sew it or use glue to stick it. Both ways can be helpful in it.

Also, attach the handles of the polyester belt. You can sew it or attach it with super glue. With its help of it, you will be able to carry this bin easily.

Fabric Storage Bin with Cardboard Layer

The next type is almost similar but the addition of a cardboard layer will be in it. It is for those who need to use slightly heavier objects inside this fabric bin. All you need to do is follow all the above steps but replace the third step with a cardboard layer. You need to use a cardboard layer instead of thick interfacing to provide more strength to the base and sides of the box.

You can also add pockets outside the fabric bin and place cardboard layers in each pocket. It will add extra thickness to give additional support. As a result, you will also have the best oxford storage bin at home.

Conclusion

There are some other ways of making these fabric bins at home but we decided to share the simplest way with you. You can easily follow the above steps and make yourself as many as you want in different sizes.
